Cosmetic braces are required for cosmetic reasons, in the majority of cases; to realign and straighten teeth crooked teeth, correct any large gaps and rectify overcrowding of teeth. There are numerous reasons why people may require orthodontic braces. In doing so, the final result is an attractive, straight smile. Orthodontic braces can also be used to correct over and underbites, malocclusions, overcrowding, and TMJ disorders.
Metal Braces: These braces are the most well known and popular type of dental braces. They consist of metal brackets attached to the tooth and metal wires that run through the brackets. The wires apply force on the teeth causing them to move into the desired position. Metal braces are the least expensive of all the dental brace options, and are strong. However they can lead to self-consciousness in those wearing them, as they can be considered unsightly, and not as aesthetically pleasing as other newer dental braces. Metal braces can also cause some discomfort in those who wear them, with minor cuts and irritation of the gums and tongue a possibility.
Lingual Braces: These dental braces are placed on the inside of the teeth, so they are a lot more aesthetically pleasing than traditional braces. They do cost more than traditional metal braces and take longer to achieve the desired results. Furthermore they can be uncomfortable for your tongue as they may cause some minor trauma.
Ceramic Braces: With ceramic braces, the brackets of the dental brace are the exact same colour of natural teeth so they are virtually unnoticeable from afar (but can be seen upon close inspection). As a result they are not as unsightly as traditional braces, reducing self-consciousness amongst those wearing them. Ceramic brackets are generally smaller and less bulky than metal brackets and are easier to clean. They also cause less irritation to the surrounding gums. Ceramic braces are more costly than metal braces and take slightly longer to straighten the teeth. The ceramic brackets can also dislodge from the teeth more easily so care should be taken to avoid hard, crunchy or chewy foods.
Invisalign: Traditional braces work through the use of brackets and wires. Invisalign uses an advanced technique where clear, custom-fit, aligner trays are used to gradually move teeth into the final desired position. These trays are made of strong clear plastic that are virtually invisible. A big advantage is that the trays are removable, so that you can brush, and floss your teeth easily and thoroughly. They are also removed when eating or drinking. With traditional braces the wearer has to avoid certain foods that may cause damage to the braces, this is of course not an issue with Invisalign treatment. Invisalign trays can also be removed for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, graduations, photos. Given this, they are an attractive option for those people who do not want others to know they are wearing braces. Invisalign is the most costly of all the orthodontic brace options, but are very durable and comfortable. An expert consult is required as not everyone is a suitable candidate for Invisalign. Patients that have severe misalignment, malocclusion, or significant overcrowding of the teeth may not be suitable candidates for this treatment.
